Washington, D.C. — On December 19, the House of Representatives voted 227 to 203 to pass the Republican tax giveaway to millionaires, billionaires, and big corporations known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

In response to the vote, Progressive Congress Action Fund, an inside-outside strategy organization dedicated to connecting working families and grassroots organizers and progressive Members of Congress, released the following statement:

“We firmly condemn the House vote to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, more accurately known as the GOP Tax Scam. This blatant attempt to benefit the ultra-wealthy and corporate cronies at the expense of working families will go down as history as the least popular piece of legislation in recent memory. At every stage of the process, the Republicans have attempted to mislead Americans about what the bill contains, while trying to pass this heinous piece of legislation through sneaky, secret, and misleading tactics, even while millions of Americans have expressed their opposition to this horrendous legislation. Most if not all of the Congressmembers voting on the bill have not even been able to read it in its entirety. The bill directly hurts ordinary working families to pay for a giant tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. The bill even includes incentives for corporations to send jobs overseas.

Nonpartisan analyses have shown what a disaster this legislation is for ordinary working families around the country. The GOP tax bill would harm 86 million working family households, while 83 percent of the benefits would go to the wealthiest one percent. Over half of all American households will pay higher taxes as a result of the bill, while 13 million families would lose access to essential, life-saving affordable healthcare. Republicans weren’t content with trying to dismantle healthcare or social safety nets; they are determined to hand their corporate and ultra-rich donors a big present in time for the holidays, while working families will pay the price.

Americans have made their voices heard on this matter. We are watching. History will remember whether legislators voted to stand with working families or to sacrifice their well-being for the sake of campaign donations.
