Progressive Caucus Action Fund celebrates DACA Decision, stands with immigrant youth and their families
Washington, D.C. — Today, Liz Watson, Executive Director of the Progressive Caucus Action Fund released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling that President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program was arbitrary and capricious.
“We are relieved that the Supreme Court’s decision overturns the Trump Administration’s cruel and reckless attack on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. DACA recipients and their families are our neighbors, our friends and our family. Their home is here and we stand ready to fight for their rights today and every day.
This decision is the result of the courage and organizing of immigrant communities including the hundreds of organizations in the Home is Here coalition. It’s clear that in this decision, the Supreme Court sided with the American people who overwhelmingly support the DACA program over the Trump Administration’s hateful attacks on immigrant communities.
We are celebrating this victory, but we know that the Trump Administration continues to attack immigrant families. Today’s case does not prevent the Trump Administration from rescinding DACA in the future and we must remain on alert. This crisis was created by the Trump Administration and it is the Administration’s duty to end it. We join with the Home is Here Coalition and call on the Trump Administration to cease its attempts to end this important program. The Administration must not attempt to attack or deport immigrant youth and must ensure that USCIS does not share information about DACA recipients and their families with ICE.
We must take action to ensure that the protections within the DACA program are made permanent. The Senate must pass, and the President must sign H.R. 6, the Dream and Promise Act, which passed the House just over one year ago. We recognize that the attacks on immigrant youth are part of the scourge of systemic racism and xenophobia gripping our nation. As our nation grapples with the horrific police murders of Black people, it is important to recognize that Black immigrant youth are deported at higher rates and often face violence as immigrants and as Black people. We recognize that the fight for immigrant rights is part of the larger fight against systemic racism. The Progressive Caucus Action Fund is committed to the fight to end white supremacy and win protections for all immigrants.”
