Democracy is Worth the Wait

Progressive Caucus Action Fund Executive Director Liz Watson released the following statement in the aftermath of the 2020 elections:

“From coast to coast, voters turned out in record numbers for the largest election in US history! No matter where we live or what we look like, we all know that our democracy only works when everyone’s votes are counted.

Some politicians and the corporations that back them tried to silence our voices and rig the rules with long lines, voter intimidation, and shuttered polling places. The obstacles to voting this year were no accident.

But the American people were undeterred. Because of the pandemic, voting looked different this year for many of us. To stay safe, more than one hundred million people voted by mail and before election day. Now election officials across the country are doing their job and carefully counting every ballot, just as they do every election. Democracy is worth the wait.

While we wait for final election results, we have just surpassed the terrible milestone of logging 100,000 coronavirus cases nationwide in a single day. It is time for our elected officials to respect the will of the people and immediately pass a coronavirus relief package that extends relief for our families, essential workers, local small businesses, schools, hospitals, and state and local governments.”
